Ultraman Lightning is KitsuneSoldier's first Ultra Series.

Premise

This series starts out lighthearted and comedic, but gets darker as it progresses. It contains a recurring kaiju ally and occasional appearances by a superior Ultra, in this case Ultraman Mebius, who later gains a human host.

This series is also a loose celebration of Ultraman Dyna's 20th anniversary, which Tsuburaya Productions forgot.

Plot

After foiling an evil alien's plot and gaining amazing new powers, an Ultra from the Land of Light has been sent on a mission to Earth. There, he will make new friends, fight tough battles, and learn what it's like to be human.

Arcs

  • Beginning Arc: Episodes 1 through 4. These episodes introduce the cast and have no real overarching plot.
  • Alien Arc: Episodes 5 through 10. Alien invaders take the central stage, culminating in a secret about two characters being revealed, and Deox having to rethink his strategies.
  • High Voltage Arc: Episode 11 through 15. A two-parter features Lightning's toughest foes yet and a new form that can match them, followed by another "breather" episode that reintroduces a minor character from early on. Deox is not the antagonist of these episodes.
  • Last Stand Arc: Episode 16 through 20. Deox's final gambit against Lightning, this is the last and darkest part of the series, culminating in the final battle.

  1. Lightning Strikes
    • Plot: Ultraman Lightning, reluctant protector of Earth, makes first contact, attracting the attention of defense force CAKE. He takes his first awkward few steps in making new friends, understanding human culture, and learning how to balance fighting invaders with actually living life outside of being Ultraman.

  2. The Golden Touch
    • Plot: Newly enrolled in CAKE, Lightning's human form, Taji Kawabata, is beginning to adjust to human life. His first mission pits him against an enemy of the first Ultraman who has returned to plague the very location it did more than 50 years ago. Taji attempts to get to know shut-in Isaac, but is simultaneously faced by the mysterious girl with silver hair.

  3. I Can't Control Myself
    • Plot: An alien called Nanzo comes barging into CAKE HQ, demanding that they protect him. He and his cute pet, Gyabish, are on the run from Xash, a deadly hunter responsible for the destruction of Nanzo's home planet. However, when Gyabish suddenly begins to grow into a dangerous monster, and Xash reaches out to Taji, it becomes clear that things are not as they seem.

  4. Taji's Nightmare
    • Plot: CAKE is called in to investigate a Seikumo household, where a boy's recurring nightmare is believed to be the work of a monster. Initially, the group declines, but when they learn Taji has been fighting the same monster in nightmares of his own, they spring into action.

  5. The Sharpshooter

  6. The Lost Ball
    • Plot: Claire hires an eccentric young alien who takes pride in chaos to take out Lightning. While the plan was simply to unleash a plant monster on CAKE, twists occur when the boy steals Taji's Thunder Ball. Now Taji must get it back and become Lightning in time to stop the plant monster when influence from outside causes it to go through a powerful new transformation.

  7. A Change of Perspective
    • Plot: He's yesterday's news as far as Claire is concerned and his monster weapon is gone, but Vahta from Planet Tilt isn't out of the game yet. Sneaking into CAKE's base, Vahta unleashes his race's special power, literally leaving Taji and the others standing in each other's shoes! When Wakako's an Ultra, Captain Ida's a tiny Gyabish, and whatever happened to Gabara and Alec, it'll be a mighty struggle to finish this fight!

  8. Double Payback
    • Plot: Gabara's past is about to catch up to him. He once had a career as a fighter, but when he was accepted into CAKE, he spectacularly quit by cheating in a match. The organizer of the ring he fought for is now out to see fit that he gets what's coming to him. Meanwhile, Deox revives Lightning's first enemy, Stellade, in a powerful new form for a rematch with the Ultra. When Ida is hurt, Gabara must take over. Can he and Lightning make it through double payback?

    • Plot: After his adventure in Ultra Space, Lightning finds himself chasing a deadly minion of darkness between dimensions. Crash-landing on Planet Glacier, he quickly gives in to the cold and is captured by a band of aliens, but help is coming!

    • Plot: While on patrol, Lightning encounters a sinister exchange between two brothers who survived the destruction of their infamous home planet. Investigating the same issue is Ultraman Geed, who Lightning has some knowledge of; none of it teamwork-building. Will an intervention by members of the Ultra Brothers get Lightning and Geed on track, or just result in their mutual destruction?

CAKE (Crew of Anti-Kaiju Experts)

An attack team who work undercover as the staff of a bakery in the city of Seikumo.

  • Taji Kawabata: The human form of Ultraman Lightning.
  • Ida Hara: The captain of CAKE and owner of the bakery.
  • Alec Craig: A transfer from America, the marksman of the group. Also comic relief. Takes people's orders at the bakery.
  • Wakako Narashi: The inventor of the group, she designs the weapons, vehicles, and recipes.
  • Gabara Tendou: The muscle of the team and the best baker among them.
  • Isaac: The monster expert of the team, in charge of their kaiju database. Is hiding a secret.

  • Yoh Kagenari: An intrepid reporter who appears in the first episode, he ends up being the basis for Lightning's human disguise (who he never sees in his meetings with CAKE.) He continues to make appearances as a side character throughout the series, akin to the reporters from Ultraman Gaia.
  • Mikasa Tsugami: Yoh's athletic camerawoman, Mikasa is willing to follow him through any condition to get quality footage. She quickly meets Taji and figures out his basis on Yoh and identity as Lightning, though nobody believes her.
